How salary sacrificing into super works

When you sacrifice salary into super, the money is taxed at 15% in your fund instead of your marginal rate of up to 47% including Medicare. On a $100,000 salary the marginal rate is 32%, so each sacrificed dollar saves about 17 cents net, while locking the money away for retirement.

Your employer's super guarantee (12%) counts toward the concessional cap, so the room left for extra contributions is the cap less SG. Exceeding the cap means the excess is taxed at your marginal rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the concessional contributions cap?

It is the most you can put into super each year before extra tax applies. It includes your employer's super guarantee contributions as well as salary sacrifice. Unused cap amounts can be carried forward for up to five years if your total super balance is below $500,000.

How are salary sacrificed super contributions taxed?

Concessional contributions are taxed at 15% inside your super fund (30% if your income is above the Division 293 threshold of $250,000) instead of your marginal rate.

Does salary sacrificing into super reduce my take-home pay?

Yes. Your take-home pay falls by the amount sacrificed less the tax you save. The trade-off is a larger super balance that you cannot normally access until you reach your preservation age.
